Bruce Residence
Custom Home

The wide enclosed side yard of this corner lot in the historic Rosegarden area of San Jose presented a design opportunity.  With a unique design, it could provide the owners’ desires for light and openness to the outdoors while maintaining privacy. The two main challenges were to reorient the most used “public” spaces of the house as well as the master suite toward the private garden, and to complete construction in phases while the owners remained in the house.  The first phase of the project was to build the new kitchen and family room.  A new patio was installed and the yard was partially landscaped. The next phase was the second story addition shown in the progress photos. The original house was 1,250 s.f. with two bedrooms and two baths. The completed house is four bedrooms and four and a half baths with 3,200 total s.f.

The open design of the home is accentuated by intersecting ceiling planes and an operable skylight over a 28-foot tall central great room. This brings a cascading play of light and shadow over faceted surfaces into the heart of this transitional style home.  The flow of both light and space from this airy high space makes the surrounding lower ceiling spaces feel intimate but also light and open.
